VIC - Wasting Away? Oh, No.

Against my better judgment I did not work the evening of April 25 and the daytime of April 26.

It was not something I had planned, and when I was told I was going to miss work that Thursday night, I was a little annoyed. My faithful, but sometimes managing wife had planned something else.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am as spontaneous as the next guy. Pat wanted to surprise me, but my annoyance ruined that plan. She already had it set up with Boss Brian, and that made it even more annoying. She had gone around my back, so to speak.

As it worked out, our crack photog Pete Cochran took care of the assignment I was missing. But, at the moment of “the surprise”, that wasn’t the point. All I could hear in my mind was “missing” - a big event, something I try never to do, even through hail and night, and the sniffles and chills.

Unacceptable.

Until ...

I just got over myself. How many times in life does a person care enough about you to really do something unexpected? Take care of your mental health. Plan a fun outing (though in my defense, it was a 4-hour drive!).

People of an age and a steel drum soul are going to know where we went with just two clues. Shaker of salt, and fins.

It was our third “blockbuster” concert of the year. The others, Fleetwood Mac and Sir Elton John.

Pat planned that second one in cahoots with my daughter - Dr. Victoria Lee MacDonald. Yes, I know, she’s “just Tori” - but she worked hard for that Wofford/USC Pharmacy degree - and I just LOVE to say it, DOCTOR Victoria!

Now, we’re going to just have to see the movie, “Rocketman” (caught the trailer during “Idol” Sunday night), and we need to do a catch-up viewing of the bio-pic “Bohemian Rhapsody.” This weekend, there’s Lee Roy Parnell at ROTR; and I just saw that May 31 is Finally Friday in downtown Laurens, and The Blackwood Quartet is coming to Lucas Ave. Baptist Church in June. Somewhere, soon, we’re going to have to catch up with the Carolina Coast Band. And, you know, I really miss The Tams.

This summer, we’re going to Vegas to see Hugh Jackman. Around Thanksgiving, with one of our extended families, we’re going to be cruising the Caribbean. If we could just get the cruise ship to stay docked overnight, long enough for us to close down a Bob Marley bar (where the good music doesn’t start til 3 am).

Hey, it’s true, 60 is the new 40.

Even as we progress into our sunset years, we’re a long way from wasting away in Laurensville.
