PC basketball women take their turn in the Big South Conference Tournament

Despres, the University of South Carolina football chaplain, was the day three featured speaker at the week-long event. The Blue Hose women start Big South Conference Tournament play on Friday at UNC-Asheville, earning their first-ever, first round bye.

Presbyterian College takes a first-round bye into the Big South Conference Tournament for the first time in school history. The Blue Hose face the Runnin’ Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb in the quarterfinals 2 p.m. Friday at UNC Asheville in the Kimmel Arena. PC ended the regular season as the second winningest team in Division I history and completed the season sweep of Liberty for the first time in school history, 57-49, on Saturday. Gardner-Webb ended its season on Saturday with a 62-59 loss at Longwood on senior day.

The Blue Hose completed the season series sweep for the first time in school history with a 57-49 win over the Flames on Saturday. PC shots 45.5 percent (10-for-22) from the floor in the second half.

Cortney Storey tied a season-high with 15 points and dished three assists, while Allie Wagner added 13 points and five rebounds. Aianna Kelly led the Blue Hose with seven rebounds and four assists.

Taylor Petty leads PC with 11.2 points per game, while Allie Wagner pulls down 5.2 rebounds a contest.

Gardner-Webb comes off its regular season ending, 62-59, loss at Longwood on Saturday. The Runnin’ Bulldogs had three players score in double figures in the game. Gardner-Webb committed 23 turnovers in the game, but outrebounded Longwood 43-32.

Candace Brown powered the GWU offense, and led all scorers, with 20 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Alexus Hill provided the Runnin’ Bulldogs with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Olivia Parker added 13 points and seven rebounds.

Brown leads the Gardner-Webb offense with 14.5 points per game, while Parker brings in 9.4 rebounds a contest.

The Blue Hose own a 30-15 record in the overall series against Gardner-Webb. PC has played Gardner-Webb more than any other Big South Conference team and owned a 10-game winning streak from 1997 to 2001. The Blue Hose knocked off the Runnin’ Bulldogs, 60-53, on January 30 inside the Templeton Center earlier this season. Gardner-Webb evened the season series with a 51-40 victory over the Blue Hose in Boiling Springs, N.C. Freshman guard, Taylor Petty, averaged 15 points and 3.5 3-pointers in the two games this season.
