Younger Named Big South Freshman of the Week
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Presbyterian College guard JC Younger (Mandeville, La.) has been named the Come Ready Nutrition Freshman of the Week, while Winthrop junior forward Xavier Cooks (Wollongong, New South Wales) has been named the Big South Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played the opening weekend of the regular-season (Nov. 11-13), it was announced today by the Conference office.
Younger scored 15 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in helping PC to a 73-71 season-opening win over Furman. He scored all 15 points in the second half, including eight straight to help the Blue Hose erase a seven-point deficit and take a one-point lead. Younger, who also had six rebounds in the final 20 minutes, finished the night 6-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range.
Cooks had 21 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots in the Eagles’ season-opening win. He scored 12 of his 21 points in the first half, including four of the final six points. Cooks’ first block of the game led to a fast break and Winthrop’s first field goal of the day. He later had back-to-back baskets and added a three-point play to stretch the lead and put the game out of reach.
