The bash brothers fight off the rain

PC baseball erupts for 6 first two innings runs, wins 12-0

PC Tops Charleston Southern, 12-0, in Offensive Onslaught on Thursday

The Presbyterian College baseball team (26-27, 11-11 Big South) racked up 12 runs on 15 hits on another rain-soaked afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex to defeat Charleston Southern (18-33, 5-17 Big South) by a score of 12-0 on Thursday. The victory gives PC its 11th win of the season against a Big South foe, a new high-water mark for the program.

Tyler Weyenberg and Cletis Avery each recorded three-hit games and scored three times at the top of the lineup. Weyenberg also swiped a pair of bases to push his school-record total to 16 on the year. Weston Jackson went 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs. He now has 25 doubles on the year to establish a new single-season record for PC’s Division I era.

AJ Priaulx had a big day as well, going 2-for-4 with a run and a career-high four RBIs, while Jacob Midkiff went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run. Ryan Hedrick belted a triple to right to go with a run and an RBI on the day.

Brian Kehner (5-6) returned to his winning ways with 5.0 scoreless innings of two-hit work with five strikeouts against one walk. Trey Hayes, Robert Moss and Michael Trebendis combined to throw 4.0 scoreless innings of relief work to complete the shutout. Evan Raynor (4-5) lasted just 1.1 innings to take the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits with a pair of strikeouts and no walks.

PC scored early and often with three run in each of its first two at-bats. Weyenberg singled to left to lead off the game and stole second a few pitches later. After a lineout to left, Jackson hit an RBI ground-rule double to left center to drive in Weyenberg and get PC on the board. Priaulx followed with an RBI single to right center to score Jackson for the second run. Two batters later, Nick Wise hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Priaulx from third, after a Midkiff double, and make it a 3-0 PC lead.

Avery drove in the first run of the second with an RBI single to left to make it a 4-0 advantage. Jackson then reached on an error by the third baseman that allowed Weyenberg to score and Avery to go all the way to third with one out. Priaulx would bring him in with an RBI groundout to second to push the lead to 6-0.

The Blue Hose tacked on four more runs in the fourth inning. Hedrick led off the inning with a triple to right and Weyenberg followed with a double to score him from third. Avery then came through with an RBI single to left, scoring Weyenberg. Jackson doubled for the second time in the game to put runners at second and third with no outs. Priaulx delivered with a single up middle to drive in both runners and make it a 10-0 game.

PC added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Guy Casaceli got a pinch-hit, RBI single to center to drive in Midkiff and make it 11-0 in the seventh. In the 8th, Nick Guimbarda got an RBI single to plate Avery, who doubled one batter earlier.

The shutout was the third of the year for PC pitching and the second combined shutout of the season, both of which involved Kehner. The Blue Hose also blanked La Salle on March 5 and Gardner-Webb on March 25.

The two teams are slated to continue the series on Friday at 3 p.m. However, wet weather continues to be in the forecast for both Friday and Saturday. Continue to check for the latest updates.
