State/Nation: Trump’s Ban on Transgenders Serving In The Military is Shameful!
SC Equality: “You’re obviously not our President”
Columbia – President Trump's breaks his campaign promise to the LGBT community, he is reversing the policy allowing transgender individuals already serving our country to do so openly.
Last year, Defense Secretary Ash Carter and President Obama lifted the ban on transgender individuals, they have served openly and without fear of discharge. The Department of Defense concluded the medical costs were minimal.
The facts are for the past year, with over 15,000 transgender troops have served without fear or having to lie about who they are, transgender troops have been good for military readiness and good for morale.
SC Equality Executive Director Jeff Ayers said “The Department of Defense spent over a year, previous to the ban being lifted, meticulously studying the integration of transgender people in the military and it’s had over a year since to review the results — and what they found was that allowing transgender people to serve without fear or lying about who they are is good for military readiness and good for morale.”
With an administration in turmoil with ongoing investigations into collusion with Russia, Ayers added “Yet another misguided decision from an administration that proves it does not serve all citizens and yet another example of the President’s attempt to distract the public from his ongoing troubles and pandering to the conservative Christian right to hold on to his support base.”
This reversal by a Commander-in-Chief who has never served is pure political hypocrisy, it’s shameful. This policy was studied by the department of defense and should not be reversed based on a few tweets. That is not leadership, that is not who we are as a country. Equal means everyone.
SC Equality, along with LGBT organizations from states across the country, will be rallying their base and calling on congress to do the right thing and stand up from transgender Americans. Ayers concluded “we will remember every elected official in Washington at the ballot box that refuses to take a stand with us”.
