LETTER: Taxation, no representation

The editor:

The constituents of Laurens County District 5 are being taxed without representation.

Councilman (Keith) Tollison has been absent nine of the last 10 county council meetings. Councilman Tollison’s employment has pulled him out of state.

Although Councilman Tollison appears sincere in his efforts to be present, he has not provided any information regarding when he plans to participate in the next scheduled council meeting.

In the meantime, the voters of district 5 are not being represented. Councilman Tollison may be working out of public eye, but he is not voting. How many more votes will he miss?

Councilman Tollison is still being paid as if its business as usual. According to the SC Association of Counties Wage and Salary Report of 2014, Councilman Tollison’s annual salary is $9,798.

Based on increases to nCouncil members pay, this figure is likely to be higher in 2017. This is unacceptable. It is unfair to every citizen of District 5. Councilman

Tollison would likely argue that the cost of a special election, if he were nto resign, would be costly.  What is the cost of not being represented during county council meetings?

This is taxation without representation.  What if he doesn’t attend another council meeting till the end of his term in December 2018?  Should he still collect his annual salary?

The Laurens County Libertarian Party respectfully requests that Councilman Tollison resign his seat. The effective date of the resignation should be 14 weeks from today.  The 14 weeks would allow time for the SC Election Commission to conduct a special election.

Councilman Tollison will be able to continue his out of public eye council work during those 14 weeks.

Additionally, Councilman Tollison should begin forfeiting his salary effective June 1, 2017, when his repeated absences began.  This forfeiture will help offset some of the cost of the special election.

The citizenry of District 5 deserve better, they deserve representation, and they shouldn’t be paying for a councilman who is absent.
