Editorial: Way to go, Blue Hose
Seemingly forgotten in much of the social media buzz about three national championships by three South Carolina colleges in less than 12 months is the fourth national title – captured by Presbyterian College.
The Blue Hose won because they are the Blue Hose. Fox Sports held a College Basketball Team Nickname contest alongside the NCAA basketball tournament (we’re not allowed to use the Third Month of the Year Madness because it’s trademarked).
The nickname tournament started out with 64 teams, as did the cage event. PC was in the Strange & Quirky Region. The other regions were: Friendly & Funny Region; Strong & Virtuous Region; and Formidable & Scary Region.
In an opening round of godly schools, the Blue Hose demolished the Texas Christian Horned Frogs with 68% of the vote. PC won the second round over Saint Louis University’s Billikens with a blistering 80% of the votes cast.
In the Sweet 16, it was PC with 71% of the vote against the Shockers of Wichita State with 29%. The Blue Hose defeated the Ragin’ Cajuns from Louisiana Lafayette in a squeaker, 51%-49%. And, to be honest, it would have been hard for us to vote against the Ragin’ Cajuns. That is a terrific nickname.
But PC moved into the Final Four and took on the Fighting Camels of Campbell University, a fellow Big South school. Blue Hose-56%; Fighting Camels-46%.
In the championship matchup, it was the Presbyterian College Blue Hose versus the Leathernecks of Western Illinois. The Hose took a handy 74% of the votes to bring the national title to South Broad Street.
Well done, Hose. Well done.
