Community residents are planning a Prayer Vigil for the United States tonight (July 12) in Clinton.

The gathering will be held at 6 pm at The Depot. Organizers are Rhonda Gary and Eric Robinson (former Clinton Dept of Public Safety officer). They said, "It's time we realize that ALL lives matter."

A Prayer Vigil also is scheduled for 8 am Wednesday in Laurens, at the Courthouse Square. Organizer is Lt. Judy Stiles of the Laurens County Sheriff's Office. She said, "All those that believe in our God, come and join us and let's pray for unity within our community."

A report said pastors who've confirm to attend the Wednesday morning event include Rev. Bryant Cheek, Springfield Missionary Baptist Church; Pastor William Cole, Faith Baptist Church; Rev. Alice MacKeil, Laurens First United Methodist Church; Rev. Anthony Sims, Friendship Baptist Church, Ninety Six; and Pastor Gwendolyn Kinard, Chosen Generation Ministries, Laurens.

The Prayer Vigils are in response to tragic events in Dallas, where 5 police officers were shot to death by a veteran, who also was killed; and in Louisiana and Minnesota, where two black men were shot to death by police officers. Protests throughout the nation have shut down major roadways, including highways in Columbia and Greenville.

The vigils will stress Unity, and better relationships between the police and citizens.
